SYNOPSIS 'I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul' concludes William Ernest Henley's Victorian poem Invictus - translated as Unconquerable. This is the tone set for this Clint Eastwood homage to Nelson Mandela. After spending 27 years in prison and being released aged 71, Mandela (Freeman) is now President of South Africa. But the tensions of the post- apartheid country are palpable and need to be addressed. Mandela's genius was to realise that the white dominated sport of rugby could be a route to inter-racial understanding. Mandela tells the Captain 'We need inspiration: we must exceed our own expectations,' Through their leadership, and directly that of the South African team's captain, Francois Piennaar ( Damon) the Springboks raise their game but remain the underdogs as the 1995 rugby world cup gets under way with the All Blacks as the favourites.
Freeman and Damon have been nominated for acting gongs in the 2010 Oscars in this gripping and highly entertaining, eminently feel-good film which transcends the confines of the late 1990s.
PRESS 'A surprisingly entertaining sports movie. .also perhaps one of the most effective films about the end of apartheid' - The Independent
