An Education

CAST Peter Sarsgaard, Carey Mulligan, Alfred Molina, Dominic Cooper, Rosamund Pike, Olivia Williams, Emma Thompson, Cara Seymour, Matthew Beard, Sally Hawkins SYNOPSIS This unexpected hit has wowed audiences since its release in October and has gathered extraordinary praise (12 festival wins and 41 nominations) including three Oscars nominations for best picture, best lead actress (Carey Mulligan) and best screen play (Nick Hornby). The film is set in a perfectly recognisable dull, staid and damp suburban England in 1961 just before the swing came into the sixties. It tells of the relationship between 17 year old Jennie (Mulligan) and well healed, sophisticated David (Sarsgaard) not far off twice her age. Jenny is a bright A level student and is preparing for her Oxford entry examinations with the support of her blue stocking teachers and her loving but inarticulate parents. But she gets a glimpse of a life infinitely more exciting and begins to question a future in academic purity as she enjoys an altogether more practical and bumpy sentimental education. This rite of passage / coming of age story is a big cut above the average. Andrew Urban concludes 'Profoundly satisfying film that observes human nature with a wry smile.' PRESS 'Thrilling --for the radiance of Jenny, who's wonderfully smart and perilously tender; for the grace of the direction, and the brilliance of the screenplay.' Wall Street Journal
